to around 100 million population of USA.
Basically the blue cross blue shield association was formed in 1982 with merging
of two companies “The Blue Cross Association” and the “National
Association of Blue Shield Plans”. The Blue Cross Association was involved
in “Hospital Coverage” while the “National Association of
Blue Shield Plans” was involved in medical coverage.
Today these Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance companies have franchisees
works in there defined regions under one or both of there association brands.

There are two well known companies which are working as publicly traded for
BCBS. One of them is Anthem and another one is Empire.
Anthem insurance company was established in 1980s as a operation of American
General Insurance as a independent. Later on in 2004 it was merged with BCBS
(Blue Cross Blue Shield) . Later on at Late 2004 the Anthem was merged with
a well known company of insurance the Well Point. In Current time the Anthem
does not exists as independently. The Anthem Blue cross blue shield name is
used by the WellPoint in 11 states.
Empire BCBS (empirebluecrossblueshield) is another publicly traded company
working as non profit base.
